A canyon of reddish walls where the Mijares river flows through turquoise pools, and a spring that gushes at a constant 25 °C every day of the year: Montanejos is inland Castellón's "Caribbean", and bathing here in midwinter with steam rising off the water is unforgettable.
The waters of the Fuente de los Baños, rich in sulphates and magnesium, have enjoyed medicinal fame since — legend says — the Moorish king Zeit-Abu-Zeit reserved them for his harem. Shallow stretches delight children (always supervised: some parts are deep), and the signposted trails of the Mijares Narrows add the perfect canyon walk.
To round off the day, the Montanejos Spa offers a thermal circuit and treatments, and local adventure companies run kayaking, rafting and climbing in the gorge.
In high season (summer, Easter, holidays) access is ticketed with capacity limits (~€3 online, children and seniors ~€2 — book on the town hall website); arrive before 10 am or use the tourist train, and note the parking is a paid blue zone. No pets, coolboxes or parasols. Off-season, access is free and the place is nearly yours.
