You are in the land of wood-fired rice, Serrana de Espadán olive oil, Calderona honey and just-picked oranges. This is our honest pick of where to eat well near the villa, from an everyday almuerzo to a celebration lunch.
The must: La Garrofera (Serra, 20 min), a picnic-grove restaurant inside the natural park whose wood-fired Valencian paella with rosemary was ranked fourth best in the world, at ~€10 a serving. Weekends only and always full: book one or two weeks ahead. Another one-off experience: rice under the pines of the Santo Espíritu monastery at El Convent (Gilet, 10 min).
In the village itself, Restaurante Torres Torres is the comarca's classic for wood-fired paellas and fideuà at village prices (book at weekends). In Segart, the terrace of L'Olivera crowns the Garbí hike; in Albalat, El Rincón de la Calderona grills with the sierra in view; and in Náquera — the Calderona's pantry — El Rebolloso, the El Pastoret grill and El Salt lead the pack. Rice by the sea: Arrocería Alfonso in Puerto de Sagunto; an elegant dinner: L'Armeler, in Sagunto's Jewish quarter.
To take home: Serrana de Espadán olive oil from the Segorbe and Viver mills, rosemary and orange-blossom honey from Náquera and Serra beekeepers, Segorbe cured meats and cooperative oranges from Camp de Morvedre (Sagunto's Wednesday market is a must).
