In the Lullén valley, nestled among orchards, cypresses and one of the lushest pine forests of the Calderona, the charterhouse of Porta Coeli — "heaven's gate" — has stood since 1272, still inhabited by Carthusian monks.
The monastery itself is closed to visitors, but you won't miss it: the Yellow Route, a very easy 4.9 km loop (about 80 m of climbing, 1.5–2 hours), strings together the lookouts with the best panoramas of the monastery, its Gothic aqueduct and the Camp de Túria, with the Rebalsadors massif behind.
It is the perfect family morning: a wide path, yellow markers anticlockwise, and the Pla de Lucas recreation area — picnic tables under the pines — as base camp. Also a classic for beginner mountain bikers.
Easy parking at Pla de Lucas (CV-328/CV-331), about 30 minutes from the villa. The first half is in the sun: hat and water. Spring, with the pines in bloom, is its finest hour.
No — it is an enclosed monastery inhabited by Carthusian monks. The yellow route offers the best viewpoints over the complex and its aqueduct.
The main stretches are wide track, but some parts are uneven; a baby carrier is safer for very small children.
Picnic tables at Pla de Lucas; and in Serra, La Garrofera serves a wood-fired paella awarded among the best in the world (book ahead).
